QUESTION: How do I configure my HP LaserJet printer to print using AutoCAD 14?

ANSWER: AutoCAD 14 can be configured to select a specific paper size, shade, or pen width when using either the HP-GL/2 driver or the System Printer ADI 4.3 driver.

DETAILS: Refer to the following information for assistance with configuring AutoCAD 14 to select paper sizes, shades, or pen widths when using either the HP-GL/2 printer driver or the System Printer ADI 4.3 driver.

Introduction (back to Table of Contents)

This information allows AutoCAD release 14 for Windows to produce successful plots on HP LaserJet printers.

Windows driver information for AutoCAD 14 (back to Table of Contents)

One of the following internal drivers should be selected for AutoCAD Release 14 for Windows:

  • System Printer ADI 4.3 by Autodesk
  • Hewlett-Packard HP-GL/2 devices ADI 4.3 - for AutoDesk by HP

NOTE: LJ133EN.EXE can be downloaded from Hewlett-Packard's Web site and installed--if the ability to print raster images or print on different paper sizes (for example, Legal) is required.

The features of each driver are:

    HP-GL/2 - NR by HP

The System Printer, when configured for dithered output, provides higher quality gray scales or shading than the HP-GL/2 driver, but at reduced speeds. The HP-GL/2 driver provides higher speeds with reduced grayscale quality.

Configuration of AutoCAD 14 Windows using the HP-GL/2 Driver (back to Table of Contents)

  1. At the AutoCAD command prompt, type CONFIG.
  2. Select New.
  3. Select "Hewlett-Packard HP-GL/2 devices, ADI 4.3 for AutoDesk by HP" and press OK.

NOTE: The "NR" in the printer name stands for Non-Raster.

NOTE: LJ133EN.EXE can be downloaded from Hewlett-Packard's web site and installed, if the ability to print raster images or print on different paper sizes (for example, Legal) is required.

  1. Select "HP LaserJet 4 - NR" or Select HP LaserJet (11 x 17, A3) if the LJ133en.exe has been downloaded; then continue until prompted for the port.
  2. Select the appropriate port. If you are already configured for the System Printer, an AutoCAD information screen may appear informing you that the ADI driver will be rerouted to use the Windows spooler to avoid conflicts. Select OK.
  3. It will then give a list of defaults. Make the appropriate selections and continue.
  4. Select OK at the AutoCAD Preferences screen.

  5. Continue through the selections until you return to the Preferences screen and select OK.

How to select paper size when configured for the System Printer (back to Table of Contents)

When configured for the System Printer, AutoCAD will default to the paper size that is selected in the Control Panel within Windows. If the size is to be changed within AutoCAD, follow these steps:

  1. Type Plot at the command line in AutoCAD.
